I have a quick question. If a person wants to change their main zoid without blowing up the one they're using can they like trade it in for something of equal rank?

Your main zoid never has to be bought/sold/traded when you want a new one.
The only thing you need to do is to RP out getting rid of your old zoid and buying your new one. It doesn't have to be the same rank or anything, it just has to be RP'd out in full.

Ok and where would I rp it? Would it be at the official team shop or is there somewhere specific?

Well, the shop is for buying stuff. You can do it wherver you want.
If you're doing a simple 'sell old zoid and buy new', Romeo City would be the proper. If you're doing 'lose old zoid and find new', you'd want some place out in the wilderness. Etc.
